Mtn

Product Line Description:

The G20 Mtn is currently out of stock. An updated version of both G20 and G30 models are due 2024 (delayed due to unavailability of DAC poles). The prices shown are for the new 2024 model.

The mtn styles have been optimised for mountain trekking. Their unique design yield exceptionally strong tents that are nevertheless incredibly light at 2.75 kg and 3.15 kg for the 2 and 3 person models respectively. The mtn design combines a compact footprint and a porch with a high ceiling for safe cooking. Panels of Cuben fabric in the porch area reduce weight, increase strength and allow some light to enter.

The mtn tents are built around our standard three-pole semi-geodesic inner tent designs of the g20 and g30, as used in the ultra and trek ranges. However, the flysheets depart from convention in featuring a fourth, long pole that is inserted along the ridgeline. As well as enhancing the overall strength of the tents (for example under snow-loading), this also creates height in the porch area. The interior volume of the porch can also be increased by unclipping the inner tent from the flysheet and rolling it back.

All the fabrics, poles and components used in the mtn range are of the highest specification with emphasis on strength and durability rather than light weight. In fact, the g20 mtn shares exactly the same specification as our polar exploration model, the t25 arctic. Being a g20 means it is fully compatible with inners/flysheets of any other g20 model in the ultra and trek ranges.

Specifications:

Flysheet
65 g/m2, 50d nylon 6.6 ripstop, silicone-coated on both sides, 7000 mm hydrostatic head,
18 g/m2, Dyneema/nylon non-woven fabric (Cuben), 10,000 mm hydrostatic head.

The mtn flysheet is made from nylon 6.6 with a yarn thickness of 50 denier. Almost twice as strong as fabrics woven from lighter yarns, this is the best choice for any serious mountain, expedition or polar tent. The strength of the mtn flysheet is further assured by using only high-tenacity nylon 6.6, which has a higher tensile strength than normal nylon. Finally, the fabric is silicone-coated on both sides for water resistance to a hydrostatic head of 7000 mm. It is combined with the use of Cuben panels in the porch areas. Cuben is a fabric that was developed for the sails of the America Cup yachts. At almost a third of the weight of the 45d nylon, it has more than twice the strength. The downside is its cost – well over five times that of conventional nylon fabrics per square metre!

Groundsheet
120 g/m2, 70d nylon taffeta, TPU laminated
10000 mm hydrostatic head, factory-taped seams

The mtn groundsheet is made from a 70-denier nylon ripstop with a laminated thermo-plastic polyurethane (TPU) coating. TPU coatings have greater bonding durability (to the substrate fabric) and better abrasion resistance than conventional liquid-applied PU coatings.

Inner canopy
35g/m2, 30d nylon 6.6 ripstop, DWR treated

Poles
DAC 9.60 mm Featherlight NSL poles

The g20 mtn uses 10.0 mm DAC Featherlight NSL poles. Quite simply, these are the most reliable poles we know.

Pegs
Lightning pegs, 11 g each, square section
Flash pegs, 7 g each, narrow profile

Pegs are a vital component of every tent. Lightwave offers a range of different pegs with the g20 mtn to ensure it can be secured in all ground conditions.

Guylines
2 mm Dyneema/polyester, 3 m length, mini-Linelok adjusters

The g20 mtn comes with our Dyneema guylines, a 2 mm blend of Dyneema and polyester with a breaking strain of 180 kg. Phenomenally light, they also absorb no water so won’t freeze up in winter. The Linelok adjusters mean they are easy to tension, even with gloves on.

Pitching Overview:

The g20 mtn is pitched inner-first. Lightwave is an ardent supporter of this pitching method for the following reasons:
1. It gives greater structural integrity. Because the poles run through sleeves on the inner canopy, they directly tension and support the walls and built-in groundsheet of the inner tent and give it taut and stable three-dimensional shape. In the outer-pitch system, where the poles pass through sleeves on the flysheet and there is no built-in groundsheet, the walls must be “tied” together at ground level by webbing straps and the overall structural rigidity is not as good.
2. It allows the flysheet to be tensioned better and more easily. Without external pole sleeves, inner-pitch tents have a more streamlined, “slippery” profile and thus a greater ability to withstand high winds.
3. It makes for a lighter tent and a simpler construction, since it does not require the connecting mechanisms needed to secure the inner tent to the flysheet.
